What could possibly go wrong..?

My epilepsy story started when I was 16, just 12 days after my birthday — and, very conveniently, 12 days after getting my learner permit. Talk about shit timing.

On a Monday morning, completely out of nowhere, I had my first seizure. I had no previous health problems and absolutely no reason to think anything was wrong. Then, exactly one week later on the next Monday, I had another seizure. Not long after that, I was diagnosed with epilepsy.

Being 16, I don't think I fully understood what that diagnosis meant, and for the first few years I definitely didn't take it as seriously as I should have. As I've gotten older (and maybe slightly wiser), I've realised just how much epilepsy has shaped my life and how difficult it can actually be to navigate.

Something I don't think gets talked about enough is how lonely it can feel. Getting the right medical advice, finding answers, dealing with setbacks and having your independence taken away can be bloody hard. I've been incredibly lucky to have family and friends who have stood beside me through all of it — especially Mum, who's now stupid enough to walk 25km with me.

That's why we're doing this. To raise some money, raise some awareness, and hopefully make the road a little easier for other people living with epilepsy.
