I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy because...

I want to raise money and make a difference for people living with epilepsy. When Maisie began having seizures in February of 2024 at just 4 years old I was terrified, confused and didn’t know where to turn. We need to fund more research into this condition as a lot of the time I’m being told “we just don’t know” in answer to my many questions as a mum of someone with epilepsy.

In February of 2024 my Maisie daughter had her first focal seizure at kindy. It was the scariest phone call I have ever received in my life. It was then a month and a half later on Easter Saturday that I witnessed a seizure and it went for 10mins, the absolute worst and longest 10mins of my life. She was diagnosed with Self-Limiting Autonomic Focal Epilepsy in April of 2024.

Since this date Maisie has 20 seizures ranging from tonic clonic seizures lasting up to 3mins to almost absent seizures lasting 10-20 seconds that include strange behaviour and “zone outs”. 

We continue to make changes to medication and see the neurologist, but it feels like a lot of trial and error which is absolutely terrifying when it comes to the health and safety of your child. 

I really believe more research is needed about this condition. It has been said to me that not a lot is known about childhood epilepsy as children respond well to medication so they don’t tend to dig deeper.
