I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy because...

I was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) in 2016 and am still in a journey of acknowledging and owning it. I want to raise money and make a difference for people living with epilepsy. Please help me by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button. The more people that know about the walk, the greater the impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

My Updates

100k!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday 25th Oct
For a second there, I didn't think I was going to make it with the pain I was having and subsequent rest days I was taking. Going from next to no running, to this kind of volume was probably not the best idea... Thanks all for your donations throughout the month, that is what really kept me going with the challenge, the fact that I had people supporting me, and believing in my cause. With the 2k we raised, it will help organisations such as The Epilepsy Centre support those affected by epilepsy, which is more people than you might think, as well as raising awareness of the disease and supporting research into cures and medications. I am on a massive high right now from completing this challenge, so not wanting to get into a D&M here, but if you would like to learn more about epilepsy and its effects, feel free to flick me a message. Thanks again for your support, Joel

The Final Stretch

Monday 21st Oct
I want to start this post out once again with a massive thankyou to you all for your support this month.

It's the last week of the fundraiser, and I've only got $41 left for the big $2000 target. If we reach it this week I am also going to pledge another $200 to the cause.

In terms of the running, I might have taken a few too many rest days last week after a podiatrist recommended it, meaning I have 20km to go in 4 days (actually 3 because one of those days I have a dry needling).  Thankfully, looking at the BOM forecast, a cool change is coming in tonight, so it will be quite a bit cooler for the last bit.

So close on both fronts! Let's do it!

Marathon reached

Saturday 12th Oct
I'm struggling to phrase the post title to make sure it doesn't sound like I have run a marathon, because I haven't, I have just done the equivalent distance over 11 days. The 42.2km total distance was within reach a few days ago, so I wanted to try and hit it, and did on Friday.

Starting to get some pain in my shins and calves the last few days. I think it's pretty normal considering how much I have increased my running load the last couple of weeks. It is making me slower as well - my second parkrun was about 30s slower than last week's.

Your donations all make a big difference to my motivation, the support you have all shown is massive encouragement to me to keep up my end of the bargain, despite the pain. :)

There is still time to donate if you haven't yet, as someone who has epilepsy, your support really means the world to be <3

Parkrun #1

Saturday 5th Oct
Did my first parkrun today as part of my W4E. Something I have been wanting to do for a while. I have JME so have always been nervous about committing to early mornings. But all the donations I have received for the cause have been a great motivation, and feels good to have the support of so many people.
I wish I could have worn my W4E t-shirt as a conversation starter... hopefully I will have it for next week 🙂.

P.S. Not that it matters, but I did it in 28:54

Thanks for all the donations so far!

Friday 27th Sep
Hi all,

Just wanted to say a big thank you to all the people that have donated already. Your generosity will go a long way towards raising awareness of and supporting people with epilepsy.

I am so proud of you all for helping me raise a first $1000 so quickly. It is really motivating to me - especially those who have donated that don't know me personally.

If you are still on the fence about donating, every small amount counts and together we can make a real difference in the lives of people living with epilepsy.

Stay tuned for the updates of my running (my bit) and once again thank you for your generosity.

Cheers,
Joel
