I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy around Australia because...

I want to raise money and make a difference for people living with epilepsy. Especially for my daughter Mason who has had her own journey with Epilepsy. I want her to know she is not alone. The beginning

Thursday 8th Sep
When Mason was roughly 3 I think and at kinder, she had developed what appeared to be a little habit of brushing her hair out of her face. It became more and more obvious so I took to ensuring her hair was pulled up with no loose strands to brush out of her eyes. 
Kindergarten teachers at the time were starting to worry and mentioned it to me more than once. 
Fortunately we shared a classroom and a friendship with a paediatricians child. 
This paediatrician in passing conversation just said try not to worry it’s probably a behavioural tick when your ready Come see me in the rooms and we will sort you out with a referral to see a behavioural psychologist. 
It’s important at this point to note that the hand brushing infront of her eyes had become more vigorous and by the time Mason was in Prep she was clearly going to have some issues with learning. 
The learning all of a sudden took much more priority than any interventions for the hand “waving”.
Passing conversation about a year later with the paediatrician asking how the hand jestures were going ended up being a catalyst for diagnosis.
The paediatrician had recently been to a conference on Epilepsy and one of the keynote speakers spoke of a type of epilepsy called sunflower syndrome. 
The video they played at that conference made the paediatrician immediately think of Mason. 
If we had not have had this connection I’m sure our story would look and sound very different and I will be forever grateful to that paediatrician for calling me and prompting me to get a referral for more investigation.

7 years ago our now 14yo was diagnosed with Epilepsy. At that time we had no idea what her journey would look like. As I take part in this walk for epilepsy I will continue to up date and share our story.
