I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy because...

We live with this debilitating condition day in day out. It’s relentless. It’s cruel. It’s exhausting. It’s crippling. It does not discriminate.

We live with a drug resistant type of epilepsy which develops and increases in intensity and frequency each year. It’s not genetic, and it has no known cause.  It’s currently not treatable, despite years of multiple different medications, keto diet trials and a Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS) implant.

We still experience over 150 myoclonic Absence seizures a day. Every day.

Imagine that. Imagine how debilitating that would be to your daily life, your memory, your social interactions, your learning, your relationships, your thoughts, your feelings of self worth, your mental health.  It’s tiring just thinking about it. Now imagine living it. Every day, for the rest of your lives.

On top of this, we live with a real fear. The fear that one day, our body will just give up. It will have reached its physical and mental load of exhaustion.

This fear became a terrifying near-reality recently. Our young body stopped breathing during a particularly harrowing Tonic Clonic Seizure. A rare event, but now very much a possibility, a risk, our new reality.  The probability has now risen. Things are not improving.

We want to raise money and make a difference for people living with epilepsy.

Please help us raise funds for much needed research, treatment and support for families by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button, and if you can, join our Team. The more steps, the more funds raised.  Let’s show Dylan, and people like him that you care.

The more people that know about the walk, the greater the impact, so please spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family.

Thank you for sharing our journey, it means a lot that you care.

Day 3 Hiroshima

Saturday 11th Oct
A much more somber and peaceful day yesterday with our first bullet train 🚅  to Hiroshima.

A visit to the castle first to learn about the history of the town before the bomb. A stop in at a cat cafe homing beautiful mature pussy cats to prepare ourselves, before heading to the Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb dome and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

No amount of fluffy cats would have been enough to prepare us for the devastation where we learnt about the decades of after effects experienced after the bomb.

Our takeaways:

Those in the epicentre were the ‘lucky’ souls. We, collectively as humans haven’t learnt from past atrocities and don’t do enough to remember or teach.

This museum is up there in the most impactful we’ve been to, along with Choeung Ek. ‘Killing fields’, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and the War Remnants Museum, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

11,599 Steps / 11.9km. A lifetime of learning.

Day 2 Osaka

Saturday 11th Oct
Oh my goodness me … our feet are killing us!! … We thought yesterday was a big day, until we managed to tick off a whopping 17km today on a manhole cover and stamp hunt through the streets and stations of Osaka. Throw in Osaka Castle and Team Labs Botanical Gardens for luck. We’re going to sleep well tonight!

Thanks to our incredible supporters and our fantastic team, we’ve raised a massive $6196. Help us get to $7500!
