I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy around Australia because my husband and two kids have epilepsy

I want to raise money and make a difference for people living with epilepsy. Please help me by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button. The more people that know about the walk, the greater the impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

I am a carer of three people (husband and two kids) and everyday is a waiting game. It’s a waiting game for the next seizure. It’s a waiting game for the next barrier. My heart stops often with slight sounds that sound like the start of a seizure. Epilepsy is a very difficult condition to live with, and it not only affects the individual but all those around. So I am doing this to raise funds to support all of those lives affected with epilepsy - whether it’s the person or the carer/parent.

Who am I

Friday 15th Sep
My name is Caite, I am a mother of 2 boys with epilepsy and a husband with epilepsy.

Epilepsy first came into our lives when our oldest son had a stroke at 16 months of age. During his recovery, we noticed unusual face motions that were repetitive, as well as dropping randomly to the ground. He was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. He was on medications until about 6 years of age and we weaned him off. His last seizure appears to be October 2021 but he remains off medication today.

We were thrown into disarray back in December 2019. We were moving from Darwin to Brisbane and my husband was unwell. He had two seizures in the passenger seat. At the time we were in the middle of Australia and presented to the local health clinic. They put his seizure down to having a temperature. January 2021, he had another seizure post a stressful event at work and he has since had a number of seizures. He lost his license and regained it. He recently lost it again after seizing back in August after some stressors in our home life.

Lastly, our younger son had his first tonic clonic seizure at school in August. He previously had complex febrile convulsions but grew out of them around 4 years of age. We had been noticing some unusual movements from him since earlier this year. He has ADHD and the unusual things we were seeing was blamed on motor tics. However I just continued to have this gut feeling that they weren't. Our GP referred us onto other specialist and we were on the wait list to see someone. However, he had a tonic clonic at school which for us confirmed what we feel we have been observing at home. These are still up for debate with the medical team, they feel the facial movements are tics but we aren't convinced. He also reports weird "dreams" and what he describes is what my husband experienced for a few years prior to his diagnosis. So our younger boy is at the start of the journey, he has been prescribed medications given the history. He is going to go through testing and investigations.

I am a carer for these three individuals. Everyday is different and there are so many challenges. Without organisations such as epilepsy Queensland, I don't know what I would have done. They are supportive and have so many resources which are super helpful in various aspects! Please support them by donating to this walk!
