I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy because...
One year ago, our world shifted when our beautiful boy was diagnosed with epilepsy.
On the outside, he’s a cheeky, vibrant six-year-old. But behind the smiles are challenges that many don’t see. Epilepsy doesn’t just mean seizures. It can mean fatigue that makes school harder, medication side effects that change behaviour, LOTS of appointments, scans, tests and invasive procedures and the constant anxiety of when the next seizure may be.
And it’s not just children like him, epilepsy affects around 1 in 25 Australians at some point in their life. For some, seizures can be well controlled or grown out of, but for others, the future may involve lifelong medication or invasive procedures such as brain surgery when medicines fail. Many live with restrictions on independence, like not being able to drive, uncertainty around work or study or even just simply going for a bath poses danger.
As his mum, my greatest wish is simple: for him to have the chance to live fully, joyfully, and safely, without the heavy weight of this condition. He did not choose this battle, and yet he has no choice but to face it every day.
This year, to honour him and every family living with epilepsy, I’m taking part in the Walk for Epilepsy. Every step I take is for him, and for the thousands of Australians impacted by epilepsy every single day.
If you’re able, I’d love your support. Whether that’s through a donation, sharing this post, or simply walking alongside us in spirit it all helps raise awareness and hope for better treatments, better understanding, and brighter futures.
💜 Thank you for walking this journey with us. Together, we can make a difference.
