I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy for my son, Ollie.
This October I will be walking for my son Ollie. Between 1 and 25 October, I will be walking 150ks (or 6 ks a day) to raise funds for Epilepsy ACT. A cause that is very close to my heart.
Our journey with epilepsy began in January 2021. Oliver (Ollie) was only 16 months old (now 3) when he had suddenly collapsed and had his first seizure. We were terrified as we had no idea what was happening. We called 000 and luckily one of the ACT's PACER (Police, Ambulance, Clinician Early Response) units was just around the corner and responded within minutes. His first seizure was around 3 minutes but it felt like hours. The PACER unit called for another ambulance and we were transported to hospital.
It would be a few more months, and multiple seizures before we would have a diagnosis. Epilepsy.
Since his first seizure, Ollie has had over 30 seizures, they range from 3 minutes up to 45 minutes. Some will resolve without help, but a lot have required medical intervention. He has been hospitalised at least 10 times and has been through multiple medications.
The fear and anxiety is constantly there, not knowing when the next seizure will occur and each time a seizure occurs there is a moment of panic but we are, and will continue to do so, learning to manage. We have had refresher training in CPR, been trained to administer his rescue meds and have amazing support from our family, friends and colleagues that helps us. We are lucky, so far Ollie's epilepsy hasn't slowed him down. He is a regular 3 year old who, unfortunately, will have seizures. We are hopeful, as are his doctors, that his is a form of childhood epilepsy that may resolve as he gets older but we are also realistic that this may be something Ollie has to manage for the rest of his life. Which is why organisations like Epilepsy ACT are so important. The information and support services they provide are so important to people, and their families (like us) living with epilepsy and they rely on this support to ensure they can continue to provide these services.
So please help me by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about the walk, the greater the impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
