I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy because...

We don’t talk much about epilepsy.  And just like so many other hidden illnesses and disabilities, it’s not an issue until it isn’t under control. I’m walking to raise awareness, and raise some money for a small little organisation who are doing their best to support, advocate and promote.

I found out I had epilepsy in my late 20s, having tonic-clonic seizures in very public places and at work. The journey to seizure control was a guessing game of tests, medication and planning, learning triggers and strategies. I had a constant screaming headache, like someone had whacked me on the head with a piece of 2x4 timber. I found it hard for my brain to function at the level I was used to, and when I wasn’t quite right I found it hard (and sometimes impossible) to be my best self. I’m thankful for my family as that time would have been hard on them. After several years of trial and error with medications and adjustments, it’s now under control, I can drive, have a career and I’m a much more present mother. I live with only a mild sense that I don’t have access to 100% of my brain’s capacity. The few times I get a completely clear head I can’t believe what ’normal’ feels like. It’s feels like I’m blessed with superpowers those days!

There are still days I’m just not right. Generally it’s due to having an underlying virus, not enough rest or strangely, a quick change in the barometric pressure!

I’m going to give it a try getting in 100km in 25 days and post along the way. Please do share your own stories with me, around 1 in 150 people in Australia have epilepsy, it’s more common that you think!

My Updates

Made it - and thank you!

Saturday 26th Oct
Thank you to everyone who donated to the cause, it was really heart warming to have the support from so many, and so generously too!
I received an email from Paul Quilliam, CEO of Epilepsy Tasmania who reached out with personal thanks. The proceeds will help our local community. Especially important when specialised care and services are concentrated outside of the State.
My experience with epilepsy was hard at the start and made easier over time thanks to medication, grit and the support from people like you who have donated and heard my story. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Day One

Tuesday 1st Oct
Up early and did the first 4km. Sounds so easy when you calculate 100km in a month.

Famous last words I’m sure!
