My Story

Friday 26th Sep
I'm Tom and I have frontal/focal epilepsy.

In 2021 my first year of highschool was greatly disrupted by my epilepsy, even though I didn't know it was epilepsy at the time.
The number of seizures I was experiencing each day grew greater and greater; disturbing the learning of both myself and my classmates, disturbing my sleep, and disturbing my everyday life. It reached a point where I was having a seizure very hour of the day (and numerous times throughout the night).
All the doctors would say is that it was anxiety attacks. Even my parents believed it might be anxiety or just that I was seeking attention. I knew it wasn't.
It wasn't until I was finally referred to a neurologist that I learnt I had epilepsy. I got the medication I needed and my seizures ceased on the 1st of January, 2022.

A few months ago I had a seizure again. I'm in year 11 and now my epilepsy decides to come back??
After almost three and a half years and being taken off my medication it appears again. A week or so later I then had a second seizure. Thus, I was back on my meds and visiting my GP and the neurologist as soon as I could.
Those two seizures affected me quite a lot, mentally. And it was difficult to wrap my head around (as well as help wrap other people's head around it- especially friends and teachers who didn't know me/about my epilepsy back when I was first diagnosed).
After explaining everything to all these people, I've come to realise that many don't know all that much about epilepsy. When you tell someone "I have epilepsy," their response is always something to do with bright lights or flashing images. There are other kinds of epilepsy and there are multiple ways a seizure might look like  !

I really hope to encourage education and bring awareness to epilepsy and the Australians who live with it in my walk this October. Nobody living with epilepsy should have to go it alone.
