Understanding Life with Adult-Onset Epilepsy

Friday 5th Sep
When Laura was diagnosed with epilepsy as an adult, life changed in ways that are difficult to imagine.  Some days she is full of energy, while other days the fatigue, side effects from medication or the fear of a seizure weigh heavily on her.  She thinks about things others might take for granted—like driving, working late or being on her own. She has had to adapt to the uncertainty of seizures and the impact they have on her independence, work and her daily routines. What many don’t realise is that epilepsy is not just about the moments of a seizure—it’s about living with the constant “what if”, the side effects of medication, not be able to drive and the adjustments that come with navigating everyday life.
Yet through it all, she shows incredible resilience.  As her parent, I see that epilepsy is just one part of her life—it doesn’t define who she is or limit the person she is becoming. Raising awareness means helping others understand that epilepsy does not define her or anyone living with it—it is simply a part of their journey.  With empathy, support and education, we can reduce stigma and create a community where adults diagnosed with epilepsy feel safe, understood and empowered.
