Why Team Lani?
Our Epilepsy warrior is Alannah - the most beautiful, loving girl you will ever meet. Her smile and presence is a tonic and will light up any room. Lani also has GAND - Gatad2b associated neurodevelopmental disorder - 1 of just over 400 individuals worldwide. Of this number, 25% have epilepsy and unfortunately Lani faces the severe end of that epilepsy spectrum.
It’s not just the big seizures that make her days difficult, it’s the abnormal background brainwaves that simmer away when medication isn’t enough to do anything more than take the edge off. It’s the side effects of the 6 antiepileptic medications that she takes twice a day in an attempt to gain some control despite it’s refractory nature being incredibly difficult to control and the resulting difficulties she faces in her life with the damage epilepsy does to her brain. Lani’s epilepsy is severe and catergorised as Lennox Gastaut (LGS) and results in Developmental Epileptic Encephalopathy (DEE). Her future is uncertain however we will never give up trying to make her days that little bit easier and bring joy for her wherever we can.
The Epilepsy Foundation have been an amazing support and guidance for us in the past few years and helped us to source the best care for our girl.
