I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy because...

Almost 6 years ago at the age of 27 I had my first seizure. A month later I had another one and was diagnosed with epilepsy. I lost my license, I was at the end of my nursing degree and lost the ability to pursue any nursing avenue that involved night shift. It changed my life, it has placed a lot of limitations on me and places significant stress and worry on my husband, parents and grandparents. 

Yet, I am one of the lucky ones. I have managed to get it somewhat under control, the medication I’m prescribed works for me and I had my children prior to my diagnosis.  This is not the case for many others who get no relief from seizures and the danger that imposes on their lives. Epilepsy has significant impacts for them and their families. 

I completely understand there is one of these on your social media on the daily and we are in a cost of living crisis so I don’t expect anyone to donate but the public and majority of healthcare workers know far too little about epilepsy given it effects 1 in 25 people so this 100kms is to set myself a challenge given how much I have struggled to commit to exercise since my diagnosis and *pardon the cliche* raise awareness.
