I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy around Australia because...

Hiya!

I've been living with Epilepsy since I was 13. I have been seizure-free for over 10 years and 2 weeks ago I had a seizure whilst I was literally traveling overseas to a holiday in Venice (we were on our descent into Copenhagan!!). This was a bit of a shock and confronting to me if I'm being honest. I was fortunate to have a Dr. and Emergency Neurological nurse on board that came to support me and to have had many conversations with my husband about what to do if this occurs. My care could not have been more amazing.

I want to raise awareness and normalise what epilepsy is and reduce the stigma that I felt for so long and that I felt that I had to hide as it is a confronting thing to see and explain. I'm fortunate that my amazing husband, family, and friends are so aware and understanding of what this condition is and how to support me.

Please join me in normalising this and also any donations that you might be able to make would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and much love,

Meegs xx

My Updates

On the downhill stretch

Tuesday 17th Oct
So we have just over a week to go in this walk for Epilepsy fundraiser and it's been quite a cathartic process for me. It's actually been quite comforting to walk whilst trying to process the seizure after over 10 years of being seizure-free, the implications such as not driving for 3 months (hoping it will be only 1) and the loss of independence (of which I've always been fiercely independent) with not having the option of leaving the house to drive to the shops, or to go to Port for a walk with the boys or to the Library etc.
I've still not ventured out of the house for my walks, but I love donning the runners and doing laps of the backyard watching the boys sniff the lizards. The highlight was yesterday watching the incredible sunset over the palms and the rainforest as I was walking. This was incredibly soothing and peaceful.
I'm constantly reflecting on the amazing support, both financially and through amazing messages of support. I'm trying to walk between 5-10 km per day and am thrilled that I've exceeded my fundraising and km goals.
On Thursday, it's double donation day. Any donation, no matter how large or small, will be matched. I will also try to double my daily km to match any donation on Thursday.
With much love and gratitude.

Whoohooo!!!

Saturday 14th Oct
I managed to crack the 50kms today!!

Am going to raise the bar to 100kms. Let's get walking!!!

Halfway point

Thursday 12th Oct
Wowzers! I am quite overwhelmed with the support, both through messages and also through financial means. I've been blown away by other people sharing their stories or association with this disorder, which makes me even more determined and also less alone and feeling any stigma (self stigma, not projected from other people).
I've had a lot to process since the seizure a few weeks ago and the walking has helped enormously. I'm still a bit nervous to go walking out and about or take the boys on a bike ride whilst Simon is at work, so I have been donning the sneakers and my 'Megan Gale' sunhat and doing laps of the backyard!!  The km at the beginning was from walking around Venice for a week (must be nice!!). Also, Frankie isn't a great walker and needs lots of carries so walking around with him on lead wasn't going to get me far!
So today, I was feeling super motivated after reaching my target fundraiser goal and getting close to halfway achieving my kms, and I was determined to smash out 5kms. The boys initially just sat and looked at me wondering 'what are you doing Mum?', then got stuck into sniffing lizards and would give me a little motivational kiss as I was creating my own walking track from the back fence to the front fence!!
I'm secretly motivated to try and push towards 100kms., but will see how we go!
Thanks again for all of your support. If you can't donate but want to support the cause - get those runners on and head on out for a walk - just doing that will let loads of people know that there are people in their corner.
With gratitude and love,
Meegs x
