I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy around Australia because...

I want to help raise money and awareness to people living with epilepsy.

I can personally say it has been one of the biggest struggles I’ve faced. Growing up at such a young age with it, I didn’t realise the impacts it would have on me until I hit my teens. Even then, I still didn’t have to overcome obstacles and think about certain circumstances that i have only really had to deal with in the last couple of years coming up to my late twenties. Everyday things we are all exposed to like stress, sleep deprivation, overheating, overexertion, inactivity, and as little as the sun between the trees when driving, to name a few, is a basis of what people with epilepsy have to avoid. Even with that little list of triggers, it doesn’t even begin to explain what we are limited to. And unfortunately, while epilepsy is so common, it is not talked about enough, to the point I have to explain what to do when I have a seizure to almost anyone I meet. To be able to explain to someone what to do is incredibly difficult considering I am the one experiencing it and not being on the other side. But as an epileptic being exposed to someone else having one, it truly opens your eyes as to what it looks and feels like having to go through that, and it’s a frightening experience to say the least. While we are all different and have our limits, I always try to put my all and push myself through these triggers to show that it can be done.
