I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy around Australia because...

my brother Gerard (pictured as Garth Brooks lookalike) lives with epilepsy and it's bloody horrible!

Gerard is 30 years old, a craftsman barista, a muso, a very cute Dog Dad to Audrey, a very funny and wicked wordsmith, a dedicated student of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Livvy and Owen's Uncle Gezzy, and he has had (at times) debilitating epilepsy since he was 12 years old.

Our Mum and sister and I have all sat at his ICU bedside while he's been on life support, and we've seen him in various states of banged up from the many times he's hit the deck. His pooch Audrey is utterly obsessed with him and we are too. I honestly can't think of anything better than legitimate cures for epilepsy, and for that to be true, there need to be accessible treatments, procedures, medications, trials, research (etc etc etc), and that all needs funding, so please help if you can.

I'm also walking in loving memory of my beautiful friend Tamieka Smith who tragically lost her life to epilepsy in 2016 at only 33 years old. Meek was a really mean fitness instructor who I know will be telling me to walk faster and further and to 'stop ya bloody whinging'.

Getting the steps in

Wednesday 6th Sep
Though I mostly cycle or drive around Melbourne, I’ve been opting to give myself longer and walk, some days walking for up to 2 hours per day.

I don’t mean to be too dark about it, but I think about my little broski and how a seizure will put him in bed all day on a weekend where he might otherwise be doing all the things that 30 year old dudes should be doing; socialising, exercising, playing music, yard work, travelling, whatever. Every step I take on any given “normal” day, is a step he’s too often deprived of. Epilepsy f-ing sucks.
